What a belly is
A belly (or sag) is a section of pipe that has dropped below the proper slope, creating a low spot where water stands. On camera it's unmistakable: the lens dips into standing water, then climbs back out. Sewers work by gravity — a consistent downward pitch keeps solids suspended in flowing water. In a belly, flow slows, solids drop out of suspension, and sediment accumulates.
What causes it
Almost always: soil. Poorly compacted backfill from the original installation settling over decades, erosion from a nearby leak washing away bedding, heavy vehicles compacting soil above a shallow line, or in some soils, seasonal moisture cycles shifting the ground. Occasionally the pipe was simply laid flat or misgraded from day one.
How serious is yours?
Three factors decide: depth, length, and symptoms. A shallow dip holding a half-inch of water in an otherwise sound pipe may cause zero problems for years — we note it, we don't sell a repair. A long, deep belly holding several inches becomes a sediment trap that generates recurring clogs, and paper accumulating in the same spot on every inspection confirms it. And a severe belly can indicate a pipe joint that has separated at the sag's edges, which escalates the problem from geometry to structure.
The fix (and the non-fixes)
A true belly is a physical geometry problem, and no cleaning method changes geometry: jetting clears the accumulated sediment — worth doing — but the low spot refills. Pipe lining, often pitched as trenchless magic, follows the host pipe's shape; lining a belly gives you a smooth-walled belly. The real repair is excavating the sagged section, re-establishing proper bedding and slope, and installing new pipe — typically a spot repair of the affected footage, not a whole-lateral replacement.
