A sump pump spends most of its life doing nothing — then a nor'easter parks over New Jersey and it becomes the only thing between your basement and the water table. Pumps fail silently, and their failure is always discovered at the worst possible moment. This 15-minute routine, done a few times a year, catches nearly every failure before the storm does.
The 15-minute test
Pour a bucket of water into the sump pit until the float rises. The pump should start promptly, evacuate the water quickly, and shut off without the float hanging or chattering. While it runs, listen: grinding or rattling means bearing or impeller trouble. Check that the float moves freely — a float wedged against the pit wall or tangled in its cord is the single most common cause of 'the pump was fine but the basement flooded.' Finally, confirm the check valve (the fitting on the discharge pipe) is working: water shouldn't rush back into the pit when the pump stops.
The discharge line matters as much as the pump
Walk outside and find where the discharge exits. It should release water several feet from the foundation, onto ground that slopes away — a discharge dumping at the foundation wall just recirculates the same water. In winter, check that the outlet can't freeze shut: an ice-blocked discharge dead-heads the pump, which then runs continuously until it burns out, during the exact melt event you need it.
Know your pump's age
Sump pumps average 7–10 years. Past that, replacement on your schedule beats failure on the storm's schedule — and pump technology has improved enough that a new unit is quieter and moves more water. If your pump runs frequently (high water table, wet lot), shorten both the maintenance interval and the replacement horizon.
Backup power: the honest assessment
Storms that flood basements also knock out power — the pump's Achilles heel. A battery backup pump is a second pump with its own float that runs when the primary fails or the power dies; for finished basements it's close to mandatory. Water-powered backups (which use municipal pressure) suit homes with strong city water and no well. A standby generator covers the pump along with everything else. What doesn't work: hoping. If your basement is finished and your only pump has no backup, that's the gap in your flood protection.
